6 Handy Tips to Keep Your Home Safe From Burglars

6 Handy Tips to Keep Your Home Safe From Burglars

No-one wants to be faced with the horror of coming home to a house that has been burgled and ransacked. Apart from potentially losing money, valuables and other important keepsakes, the awful feeling of being invaded and intruded upon can last for a long time.

Most burglars are opportunistic and look for easy pickings. The more difficult you can make it for them, the less likely you are to be burgled.

There are a number of preventative measures you can take to deter burglars from entering your home. Here’s a shortlist of what we consider to be six of the most valuable tips to keep your home safe from burglars:

1. Ensure you have the appropriate locks installed.

If not, now is the time to contact Lock, Stock & Barrel Locksmiths to come and install robust and secure locks on both your doors and windows.

2. Install a home security system, including cameras and sensor lights.

There are loads of security camera and sensor light options out there, so if you’re not sure on what you’re paying for – Lock, Stock & Barrel Locksmiths can assist in advising on the right home security system to keep your home as safe as possible.

3. Take care of your home, as a poorly maintained home can seem empty.

You can do this by a few simple things, such as collecting your mail, mowing your lawn and opening blinds during the day. A car parked in the driveway is also a good deterrent.

4. Buy a dog!

Nothing scares away a burglar like a dog barking. If owning a dog is not a feasible option, purchase a dog food bowl and leave it empty at your front door.

5. Be discreet if you are going to be away.

While it may be tempting to post on social media that you are off to Byron Bay for a two-week holiday, it is not wise to alert people that your house will be empty. Get to know your neighbours too and then you can keep an eye on each other’s properties.

Plus, point #2 above – installing a home security solution will also assist with this!

6. Prevent easy access.

A large, locked gate and high fences will usually deter most burglars who like to make a discreet entry and fast exit. Also eliminate any hiding places. Anywhere on your premises that allows a burglar to hide in obscurity should be removed.

These simple measures, along with ensuring your property is securely locked up, may prevent your house from being targeted by burglars. Lock, Stock & Barrel Locksmiths is dedicated to providing you with a professional locksmith service throughout Sydney’s North Shore area.
